27 Sep 2016

Friday the 23rd of September saw the first cyclocross race of the 2016 Season hosted by kinning cycles this was the first of 4 round of there own league series and was the first floodlit cyclocross race to be held in Ireland. The round only cater for riders from Under 14 and up to senior level so not as much youth racing as the ulster rounds .The under 14 and under 16 races were run alongside the womens race and racing for Carn in the u14 girls Katie Neill finished 2nd while in the under 16 Darcy Harkness finished 3rd with Sarah Elder 4th and Anna Russell 5th and in the women race Emma Elder was 10th .

Next to the line were the B race men a with a massive field of close to 100 riders which included 4 Carn Wheelers Rodney Young , Nigel Gibson , Gareth Skelly and Ryan O'Reilly all 4 riders had strong races and finished well in the top half of the field a promising season lays ahead on this showing

The las race of the evening was the A race and by now it was pitch black with only the floodlights showing the way for the crossers it was a very spectacular sight and a great showcase for cyclocross racing in Ireland racing for Carn were Joe McCrory Barry Russell and making his debut in cyclocross Shea Gribbon again all 3 riders had a strong evenings racing but unfortunately Barry had a mechanical late on and was forced to withdraw Joe rode strongly to finish well inside the top 20 with Shea also finishing well in the top half of a quality field of riders

Thanks to all at Kinning cycles for a superb evenings racing .

Round one of the Ulster Cyclocross League at Lurgan Park

As is the tradition the ulster cyclocross league got underway at Lurgan Park a favourite venue with all the riders and always a superb opener to the league programme in ulster. There was a full roster of races from under 6 fun race right up to senior level with Carn Wheelers having 25 riders spread throughout all categories

as always racing starts with the youngest riders and Callum Lockhart and Jay Gibson were 3rd and 4th in the under 6 fun race this set the tone for the rest of the youth riders with multiple podium finishes and strong races from each and everyone of our youth riders in the under 10 boys Riley Gibson and Rhys Lockhart were in the top 10 with James Russell just behind them in the under 12 boys Travis Harkness put in a man of the meeting performance to storm home in first place with Curtis Neill and Frank and Tom Russell also in the top 10 newcomer to the club and in his first race Callum Fullerton made a solid start to racing also ,in the under 12 girls race Eimer Skelly came home in 5th place .

The u14 and 16 race was ran along with the Womens race this and in the under 14 boys race Ryan Skelly finished 3rd and in the girls race the ever consistent Katie Neill finished in 1st place ,in the under 16 boys Niall Skelly made a welcome return to racing with a very promising 6th place finish and in the girls Darcy Harkness was 2nd with Sarah Elder 3rd and Anna Russell 4th

We had to junior girls in the women race with Emma Elder and Niamh Skelly more than holding their own and finished 6th and 7th respectfully

The senior men B race was next to run with Nigel Gibson Ryan O'Reilly and Rodney Young representing Carn all 3 men continued were the left of on friday evening and pushed themselves further up the ranking with Nigel in 8th Place and Rodney and Ryan also well in the mix .Running alongside the B race was the mtb support race and Dean Lockhart had a superb 3rd place finish in it .

We had only 2 riders in todays A race with Gareth Skelly and Shane Elder taking to the start line both men had strong races in tough muddy conditions and finished strongly which bodes well for future races .

Thanks must go to Apollo cc for hosting a great days racing in a fantastic venue and thanks also to our riders who as always represented the club so well at both events lets build on a successful first weekend of the cross season especially our youth riders who continue to improve and enjoy their racing .
