ulster cyclocross league round 8 at st columb's park Derry

30 Nov 2015

Round 8 of the ulster cyclocross league was hosted by Foyle CC at St. Columb's Park in Derry the venue lent itself perfectly to cyclocross racing with superb facilities at the new leisure centre ample parking and a fantastic course with a great mix of everything from fast tarmac path to wide open parkland and some great technical single track the only downside was the awful weather with gale force wind ,driving rain and hail stones this however is cyclocross and our riders are made of stern stuff and once again turned up in their numbers to take part in the latest round of the league.

Callum Lockhart had the honour of being the first Carn Wheeler to race today and put in his best performance of the season with a great 6th place finish following Callum was under 8 rider Patrick Elliott ,Patrick also rode  a great race to come home in 5th place .Next it was the turn of the under 10's and Rhys Lockhart was the only under 10 we had today and as always he battled really hard throughout and bagged himself a seasons best 5th place finish ,racing then moved onto the under 12 boys and the flying duo of Travis Harkness and Curtis Neill were hoping to continue their strong season and so it turned out with both boys well inside the top 10 with Travis 5th and Curtis 7th .As with all rounds the racing then moved onto the full senior course with the under 14 and under 16 racing along with the men mtb support race these were to prove very successful races for the Carn riders with some strong results firstly in the under 14 races were Sarah Elder had a 2nd place finish while Katie Neill overcame a nasty tumble to secure 4th place with Darcy Harkness coming home in 6th place ,we had only 1 under 16 rider today today with Emma Elder carrying the hopes for Carn Wheelers and she secured a strong 2nd place finish .Dean lockhart was champing at the bit to go in the mens mtb support race having bagged a podium in his last outing he was hungry for more and it has to be said he had a real stormer today again and secured yet another 3rd place finish .

The days racing then moved onto the senior cyclocross races with the womens race and the mens B race the next instalments Mairead McCrory and Nigel Gibson were on the line here and with both riders showing continued improvement in form with every passing round they were hopeful the upward trend would continue as the races unfolded it was clear that this would be the case with both riders flying on the day and securing there best results of the season with Nigel coming home in 7th place and Mairead coming home in a superb 3rd place .

The final race of the day as always was the A race and if todays results are a marker for the upcoming ulster championships it would indicate that our senior riders are coming into form at just the right time with 3 riders in the top 10 first man in was Johnny Taylor in 7th place after just pipping Stephen Walsh in a sprint to the line with Stephen in 8th and not to far behind in 10th place was Joe McCrory there was also a seasons best finish for Shane Elder and Ryan Walsh with both men in the top 25 today as well .

Our thanks go to Foyle cc for hosting a really great race and despite terrible weather conditions the days racing went without a hitch with warm showers after and a fantastic spread of food for everyone it truly was a great event .Also a word for our riders who turned out on a very difficult day to represent the club superbly as always especially the younger riders who endured maybe the worst of the conditions early on well done you all did the club proud once again
