Tour Of South Derry 09
Nearly 240 cyclists enjoyed a crisp autumn morning at the start of the second running of the Carn Wheelers ‘Tour of South Derry’. Following on from last years success and positive feedback from our local cyclists and visitors everyone involved endeavoured to make the event as talked about as last years!
A lot of hard work was put in by club members, friends of the club and event sponsors in the preceding months and weeks to ensure all eventualities were catered for on the day.
After signing on, collecting their souvenir T shirt and parting with their cash, all levels and abilities of cyclists made their way to Moneymore. About the only thing out of Carn Wheelers’ control was what the weather would bring us – apart from the rain showers at the foot of Slieve Gallion we were quite fortunate to stay mostly warm and dry to reach the very welcome sight of water and refreshments at the halfway stop at the Hogan Stand in Moneyneany.
From there it was back on the bikes for the undulating Fivemilestraight, onto the ‘sting in the tail’ climb at Slaughtneil towards the home straight through Maghera, Knockloughrim, Castledawson and back to Rossa Park in Magherafelt. The cyclists were well rewarded with ample refreshments on their return and enjoyed the ‘craic’ upstairs in the Clubhouse.
Many thanks to the event sponsors O’Kane Chemists Draperstown, H&A, Niall P Cosgrove, Sportique, Purvis Stone Products, Corramore, Structures 2000 Ltd and Genesis Bakery. Thanks also to O’Donavan Rossa Club, the Hogan Stand, Macmillan staff, support vehicle drivers, marshals, doctors, Red Cross, catering helpers, PSNI, event photographers and all visiting cyclists making this a very worthwhile and enjoyable event, raising almost £3500 for MacMillan Cancer Support.
Roll on next year!
Photos of the event are now available in the Photo Gallery section. I didnt think such a small camera could take so many photos, but I managed to get them all uploaded.
If you would like any of the original photos please email info@carnwheelers.co.uk with the name of the photo/s you would like.

Tour na hÉireann 09
On the 22nd/23rd August Carn Wheelers member Gerry Kelly undertook the mammoth task of cycling from Mizen Head in County Cork to Fair Head in the North East of County Antrim, a distance of nearly 400 miles.
His cycle started at lunchtime on Saturday and Gerry cycled through the night and the torrential rain showers passing through Macroom, Limerick, Athlone and onto Cookstown. Several Carn Wheelers cyclists took turns to cycle with Gerry through the night and early morning at different stages. For about the final 40 miles Gerry was joined by a merry bunch of Carn Wheelers cyclists for some moral boosting and company to Ballycastle.
Gerry had an excellent support team of several vehicles which were all necessary, especially for the night time cycling and to provide food/drinks any any mechanical assistance. Gerry undertook this challenge to raise money for the revival of the Irish language in County Derry, in particular the six naiscoils (preschools) and the new bunscoil (primary school) in Magherafelt.
Many thanks to all those involved and who helped in any way.
Pictures of Gerry on his journey are now available in our Photo Gallery......

Ring Of Kerry 2009
On Saturday 4th July a group of Carn Wheelers made the trip to Killarney to take part in the 26th Annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.
A total of 3,428 cyclists of all abilities took part in the event, which involved a scenic run around the famous 112 mile Ring of Kerry route, taking in Killarney, Killorglin, Cahersiveen, Waterville, Sneem and Kenmare, followed by the climb through Molls Gap and back to Killarney.

Ironman 2009
A group of Carn Wheelers cyclists tackled the mammoth task of the French Ironman in Nice on Sunday 28th June. Pictured in the photo are the Ironmen Raymond Monaghan, Rodney Young, Paul McErlean, Artie O’Kane, Christopher McSwiggan and Kevin Murphy. Also pictured are vice chairman Alan Lamont and treasurer Tommie McGrath presenting the ironmen with their new Carn Wheelers polo shirts. The French Riviera is normally renowned for its beautiful beaches but there won’t be much time for sunbathing for the local participants.

The Ironmen faced a 2.4 mile swim in the Mediterranean Sea followed by a quick changeover for the bike leg which consisted of a 112 mile cycle around the Cote D’Azur and French Alps. The bike course for the Ironman France is like no other with some very long steep climbs, the longest being a daunting 13 miles long making the cycle one of the greatest Ironman challenges. With the swim and cycle completed its was time for the marathon and the 26.2 mile run leg will almost certainly drown out the pain of the bike leg. Adding to the torture of completing the distance can be the weather which can make the conditions very hot and windy. Unfortunately these local men didn't have all day to complete this gruesome event – there was a cut off time of 16 hours.
All of them finished before the cut off time and there results are as follows:
