Another win for Gribbon

13 Apr 2014
This weekend saw yet more road racing action for the boys in green and black.  On Saturday there was a full field of riders for the Wallace Caldwell memorial race promoted by Ballymena Chain Reaction.  From the drop of the flag this race was well and truly on as there were numerous attempts to get a breakaway to stick.  As usual the Carn racers were in the thick of the action and did themselves proud in an extremely competitive race in less than favourable conditions.  A small breakaway of 5 riders managed to pull away from the peleton, on the climb up Cam Forest the gap opened to 2minutes at which point a fierce headwind fragmented the chasing riders separating the clubs racers into small groups.  This allowed the front riders to stay away for the remainder of the race.

Errigal CC held race 3 of their club championship on Saturady, in the mix was Marc Heaney the clubs up and coming speed machine.  Marc continued on his recent run of form after coming close last week in the Aghagallon Cup and building on his 6th place finish in race 2 this time he secured a place on the podium collecting 3rd.  Well done Marc.

On Sunday our neighbouring club Bann Valley held their Classic race on the roads around Clady and Inishrush.  Again the wind was going to be a contributing factor in the race as all agreed a strong headwind will make a testing course all the more difficult.  Two races were run today both with a full contingent of A4 to A2 riders competing for glory.  In the A race the A3's worked hard to stay away from the chasing A2 group who could only reduce the deficit to 30seconds after 3laps.  By the last lap however both groups had come together, Melvin Steele (East Tyrone) attempted to breakaway at the bell but was brought to task by the pursuing peleton.  In the end the Carn Wheelers new star Ali Gribbon broke away and despite being pursued by 2 riders the big Maghera man got his tactics right and crossed the line as the clear winner.  Congratulations Ali!  In the A4 race the Carn boys as usual were in the thick of the action and all involved enjoyed a strong race.
