Marc Heaney - Cycling Ulster squad at Kanturk

6 May 2014
Marc Heaney travelled to Kanturk to compete in the Corkman 2Day youth race with the Cycling Ulster Youth Academy U16 squad.

Stage 1 on Saturday morning was a tough 70km 2lap stage with several long climbs to conquer. At the finish the Ulster team were well placed coming into the uphill finish, Marc got boxed in at the sprint finish and crossed the line in 10th place.
Stage 2 was the TT, a five miler with a climb less than 0.5 of a mile in, the lads settled in well setting some good times with Marc crossing the finish in 12mins 25sec and 8th place. This left him in 11th after the first two stages.
Sunday morning saw the 3rd stage start at 11am, two laps of a circuit with three sharp hard climbs each lap. The Cycling Ulster team controlled the race from the front to try and push their team mate Conor McCann who was in 3rd overall up the leader board. A number of riders dropped off the bunch at the first climb such was the pace at the front, lap 2 saw the guys increase the pace with each doing their work on the front, when the race reached Kanturk for the last time the peloton had to negotiate the tight twisty town centre, Marc got to the front and set the increasing pace towards the sharp uphill finish helping propel Conor to the line.

After a long tough weekend Marc and his team mates achieved excellent results, with Conor McCann finishing 3rd overall, Harvey Barnes, Marc & Eathan Flavell finishing 10th, 11th &12th. A great result & experience for all the team and Marc.

Thank you to the team managers and parents who helped out over the weekend, and especially the David McCall Foundation & Cycling Ulster Youth Foundation for giving Marc and the team this amazing opportunity.
