ulster cyclocross league round 1

10 Oct 2015

The first round of the ulster cyclocross league was held at lurgan park and hosted by Apollo cc ,the weather was rather uncyclocross like as it was sunny, warm and dry making conditions very fast and meaning a lot less cleaning when the crossers were finished. As always Carn Wheelers were there in numbers from young to old .

In the under 6 race Callum Lockhart took part in his first ever race and had a great top 10 finish,in the under 8 race Patrick Elliott just missed the podium with a 4th place finish .Eimer Skelly also had a 4th place finish in the under 10 girls race and like his younger brother Rhys Lockhart also had a great first outing and a top 10 finish moving on to the under 12 race and seasoned racers Travis Harkness and Curtis Neill finished 5th and 7th great riding boys.We had 3 girls in the under 14 race and 1 boy with Sarah Elder taking 2nd and Katie Neill 3rd and Darcy Harkness also finishing very strongly in the boys race Ryan Skelly finished 8th in his first under 14 race the final youth rider on the day was Emma Elder who claimed a strong 2nd place finish.

It was then the turn of the mtb support race with Dean Lockhart and Darryl Mullan taking part both men were going really well and fighting through the field well but Dean unfortunately had to retire with a flat wheel Darryl  however had better luck and had a strong mid field finish .

A massive field of 90 riders lined up for the cyclocross b race with Graeme Elliott Gareth Skelly and a debut in of road racing for Rodney Young all 3 riders rode strongly throughout with Graeme the first Carn wheeler home followed closely by Rodney and Gareth it was then the final race of the day the cyclocross A race and lining out for Carn Wheelers was Shane Elder,Ryan Walsh,Barry Russell and Johnny Taylor and as the race unfolded it was Johnny who proved to be the strongest Carn man on the day followed by Barry,Ryan and then Shane

It had been a truly brilliant days racing and everyone was treated to a fantastic spread of sandwiches and some delicious home made cakes and buns thanks to Apollo CC for an excellent start to the league with a very well organised event and a great course .
